Dumpster Size Guide — Which Container Do You Need?

Pick the right size the first time. Too small means a second delivery fee; too big means you overpaid. Here is what each size realistically holds.

10 Yard
Approx. 12' long x 8' wide x 4' tall
  • ~3 pickup-truck loads
  • Small bathroom or kitchen remodel
  • Garage or shed cleanout
  • Small roofing repair (single layer)
20 Yard
Approx. 22' long x 8' wide x 4.5' tall
  • ~6 pickup-truck loads
  • Flooring removal throughout a home
  • Estate cleanout, single room deep-clear
  • Medium landscaping or deck tear-out
30 Yard
Approx. 22' long x 8' wide x 6' tall
  • ~9 pickup-truck loads
  • Whole-home cleanout
  • New construction framing debris
  • Commercial office cleanout
40 Yard
Approx. 22' long x 8' wide x 8' tall
  • ~12 pickup-truck loads
  • Major demolition or remodel
  • Large roofing tear-off
  • Bulky farm/ranch cleanouts (no heavy dirt)

What We Haul

Dumpster Rental FAQs

How much does it cost to rent a dumpster in Fresno?
Typical pricing in the Fresno area runs roughly $350–$500 for a 10-yard, $400–$600 for a 20-yard, and $500–$800 for 30–40 yard containers, usually including delivery, pickup, disposal, and about a week of rental. Going over the included tonnage adds per-ton overage fees — that is where bills surprise people, so always ask about the weight allowance. (These are typical market ranges, not a quote — final pricing depends on size, location, and what you are loading.)
How long can I keep the dumpster?
Most rentals include 7–10 days, which covers the vast majority of projects. Longer rentals are usually available for a small daily rate — just say so when you book so it is in the quote.
What can I NOT put in a dumpster?
Prohibited items are consistent everywhere: hazardous waste, chemicals, paint, asbestos, tires, batteries, appliances containing Freon, and electronics in most cases. Food waste and liquids are also a no. If you are unsure about an item, ask before it goes in — it is cheaper than a refused pickup.
Will the container damage my driveway?
A fully loaded roll-off is heavy — a 40-yard can weigh as much as a school bus. Reputable haulers set the container on boards or protective material to spread the weight. If your driveway is already cracked or soft asphalt, ask about alternative placement before delivery day.
Do I need a permit to put a dumpster on the street?
Containers on your own driveway or property almost never need a permit. Street or public-right-of-way placement can require an encroachment permit from the city or county — Fresno, Clovis, and Visalia each have their own rules. When in doubt, call your city public works office before the truck rolls.
How much lead time do you need?
A few business days is typical, and same-week delivery is common when containers are available. Big roofing season and post-storm stretches book up faster — during those windows, call as early as you can.
